JBL Manado Gravel

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I know that lot’s of you are still gathering information about JBL Manado. The reports on this substrate are very contradictary, that’s true. From my own experince I can say that JBL Manado will boost GH to levels most shrimp breeders do not want to have. Electric conductivity can also raise in levels up to 1000ms. And you unfourtunately will reach this parameter even when washing and rinsing the gravel. Though I am very convinced by many JBL products, I think this gravel is not really suitable for shrimp. Check out Damien’s report, too.

JBL Manado Soil still affects water parameter

JBL Manado tank

Just a quick shot I have taken of my 12L tank where I used JBL Manado as soil. I really like this gravel but although I rinsed it over 24 hours it still raised the GH and electric conductivity. Since I am still cycling my new tank without shrimps, that’s no problem. I guess after some larger water changes the parameter will not be affected anymore.

JBL Manado Soil

I have set up a tank with JBL Manado last weekend. The warm brown soil looks beautiful but could have a little bit bigger grains for the use with undergravel filter. Nevertheless, I have installed this set up after having washed and rinsed the soil in warm water for 24 hours. This will avoid a high electric conductance (=microsiemens) and reduce GH.
