Sulawesi Disease and Goldflake Shrimps, 3

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

I have had a closer look to my spinata tank today: Only two Goldflake shrimps are left; one male and a berried female. Those two shrimps are a bit ill. I hope the berried one will release the offspring before dying.

Sulawesi Disease and Goldflake Shrimps, 2

I have made a 95% water change today to get rid of the JBL Furanol2 after 4 days of medical treatment. The water has been prepared with JBL Aqua Dur to get an optimal hardness and pH over 7,5. I have count 8 shrimps left (out of 14) ; two females are berried and none was looking ill like on my former photos. I turned the UV sterilizer on again. If you are interested, check my water parameter table.

Sulawesi Disease and Goldflake Shrimps

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

After having two more caridina spinata dying, I decided to start a treatment with JBL Furanol2 in my Sulawesi tank. I dosed 2 pills on 27L water netto and turned off the UV sterilizer.

The Golflake shrimp had brown bubbles in the neck and seemed  to have molting probs. I have contacted one person ins this matter who is regulary doing imports of Sulawesi shrimp. He replied that this illness is a problem of only wildcaught Sulawesi shrimp and that it is infectious to other shrimp. Some folks assumes it might be a parasite. This prob is reported from Goldflake, Dennerli, Malili red and Red Line Shrimp. His advice is to separate ill shrimp immediately because infected shrimp will die.

News from my Tank

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Here are some updates from my shrimp tank

  1. Goldflakes (caridina spinata): 2 adults died, appearantly having molting problems, had brown bubbles in the neck before. One shrimp is berried! Change filtration to undergravel-canister-combination to reduce drift; shrimp like it and wander around more.
  2. New Bee Shrimp: 2 shrimps are berried but one only carrys few eggs – they seem to be quick egg dropper if something is not convenient. Started a crossbreeding test and put a female ‘Golden Snow White’ in the tank.
  3. Tuepfel: The first shrimp ist berried, took a long long time to go!
  4. CR/CB Shrimp: Have offspring the second time- they like Akadama as gravel.
  5. Black Tiger Hybrids: I set up a little tank with undergravel-air-filter and JBL Manado for my Black Tiger. Will crossbreed them when older.
  6. Supertiger have offspring too.

Sulawesi Shrimp Epidemic?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

One of my wildcaught Sulawesi Shrimp apparently arrived with molting problems. I detected it the next day after I got them as they where fully colorated again. Meanwhile, the shrimp looks good after having molt.

In some German forums the so called ‘Sulawesi Seuche‘ (=Sulawesi epidemic) was discussed controversially. Wildcaught Sulawesi shrimp had brown spots inside the body, looking like rust. This shrimp often died after molting. If those shrimp should be killed to avoid infection of others was a hot discussed topic. A longer arcticle about the acclimatization of caridina dennerli [cardinal shrimp] is avalaible at Mirco’s blog.

Caridina Spinata (Goldflake Shrimp from Lake Towuti, Sulawesi)

Caridina Spinata (Goldflake Shrimp from Lake Towuti, Sulawesi), 24.09.2009

I have bought my first Sulawesi Shrimp at Mr. Krabs yesterday. I finally decided to get Caridina Spinata, called Goldflake Shrimp in common. Check out pictures at water-box.de, as long as my shrimps are still acclimating. Tank set up is a 40×40x20 tank with undergravel-air and extra canister filter (Tetra EX 600). I use aqua clay as gravel, added red lava rocks and wood with green algae. Temperature is 28 Grad Celsius. I will post other water parameter later.
