What must we know about you? Details please
My name is Lars and I´m 15 Years old. I live in Wunstorf near Hanover in Germany. At the moment I am not a member of a shrimp club, but I think that will be change very soon.
When did you start keeping and breeding shrimps?
I have had an aquarium as a small child, but when I found in 2008 a breeder in the internet who sold shrimps in my town, I called him. To my surprise he lives only 2 Streets away from me. I drove to him und bought 20 red cherry shrimps. Three months later, I bought crystal red, blue tiger und tiger OE. In November 2009 I got some panda hybrids and yellow-fire shrimps, following in December with a Wine Red. Next month I will buy green shrimps, snow whites and cardinal shrimps.
How many tanks do you currently have?
At this time I have 12 tanks with different shrimps (1x160l, 6x54l, 3x25l and 2x12l).
You are still a teen going to school: How do you pay the costs for your hobby and do you have arguments with your parents on this?
Currently my parents pay the electricity and water costs. However, when I have finished my shrimp-room I must assume it. Sometimes my mother kept my crazy, but my father understands me.
What are your friends thinking about your shrimp hobby?
Oh, my friends think that I´m crazy, but in the positive sense. They give me a few nicknames like shrimp-guru or shrimp-freak, but that’s O.K. for me. I laugh with them, because it is a very unusual hobby for a teen.
What’s your favorite shrimp and why?
My favorite shrimp is the crystal red. The red with a combination from the clear white color looks so super.
Which breeding projects are you working on?
Since three months I´m now interbreeding tiger shrimps OE with crystal red. I plan to breed a crystal red with orange eyes, I think it would look very nice.
Can you share your tank set ups, please?
I will explain it on a 54l tank for crystal red as example: I use gravel with a undergravel filter. Additionally, I have a hang-on filter with 300l per hour. For the planting I often use Echinodorus bleheri, Vallisneria nana and different mosses. For lighting I simple take the supplied. Then I fill the water in the tank and fertilize the plants. In the end I check water values and adjust them if necessary. Now the tank must cycle for two or three weeks minimum.
What are your basic tips for beginners?
For beginners I always recommend a 54l aquarium with many plants und a good stocking. A water change of 20% every two weeks is adequate for the beginning when the stocking is not too much. Though there is nothing better than to inquire on the Internet.
In which online forums can we meet you?
You can meet me at:
Three WebPages you find useful:
There are many sites that I like much, special the blog of the Logemann brothers (www.crystalred.de). Recently, I started my own website (www.aquarienecke.de.tl), but unfortunately I havn´t enough time. Though it is growing slowly
Your final say:
In my opinion, shrimp breeding is the best hobby and I will hope it will be represented good for a long long time!
