Global warming and hot summer days force the use of a chiller to shrimps tanks in European countries. Only Sulawesi shrimp keepers still can lean back and relax – while thermometer raises to 40 C / 85 F in Germany. You need an aquarium chiller when room temperature is higher than the desired water temperature. A chiller should work efficient. In other words: cooling down a tank to a maximum possible for lowest costs and power consumption. To be on the safe side, I’d always prefer an chiller with coolant to a fan chiller. The inline-chiller is most often used in shrimp tanks (others are: Drop-In Chiller, Thermoelectric Chiller, DIY Aquarium Chiller, Marine Aquarium Chillers).
Making up your decision, one should have these points in mind:
- Price
- Energy consumption
- Noise level
- Ease of maintenance
- Power (Is it big enough to use for your tank?)
A problem is, that chillers produce heat and noise while working. Thus, energy balance still is better with a tank chiller than with having the room air condition working 24/7. Installation sometimes can be tricky as you may need extra installations kits or pumps. Best is to set up 1) a hose from pump or canister filter to chiller and 2) a hose from chiller to tank.
