Supertiger Features Guide

This is a guide who to recognize a Supertiger shrimp. Tiger shrimp show a wide range or different properties. So not every Tiger shrimp is alike.

As shown on the picture above, Supertiger have:

red antennas:

yellow head

yellow tail with the a black band (360 degree)

wide black or magenta tiger stripes

Although other Tiger shrimps are also very beautiful, they mismatch properties of Supertiger:

I woke up at 3.57 a.m. today hearing something strange in my office room where my tanks are. The canister filter made strange noise. ‘Oh, man: not again!’ I thought. After having a quick look at my Eheim, I found out that my tank was untight and water came out at one seam :/

Needless to say I grabbed every bucket and bowl I could find immediately! Save my three Otos, 2 Japonicas and the new arrived Supertiger shrimps and moved them to my 20 L Tetra tanks. I emptied all the tank, still feeling tired and being half asleep. Will contact the seller; hopefully I’ll get some refund.

Thus, all refund will not refund the time I invest – the cycling, the soil, the plants… that’s all kind of depressing.

Supertiger Shrimps and Bacterial Problems

My new Supertiger seem to have a bacterial problem. Today I have found another shrimp dead in my tank (#3) and decided to react now with only 7 not so well looking shrimps left.

That’s why I set up a 20L quarantaine tank with fresh water and 1 tab dissolved JBL Furanol (dosage as recommended). The active agent inside this drug is nifurpirinol. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic against most common harmfull bacteria. I will leave the shrimps for 4 days in the small tank and make a water change on monday.

Besides, I have cleaned my big tank I have originally set up for the Supertiger and did a 80% water change. Two rough amano shrimps (Caridina multidentata) called Lolek & Bolek are still inside and seemed to enjoy fresh water.

After three years of shrimp keeping I have the impression that Tiger shrimp varieties are more sensible to undesired bacteria than others.

All new Supertiger still are in good condition and have acclimated propperly. I use Mosura Shrimps Tonic daily to support acclimatization. Three shrimps have already molted. Enjoy a short video (with sound).

New Arrivals: Supertiger

I was very happy when my new Supertigers arrived yesterday with DHL Express. Special thanks to the friend who gave me ten for free! These shrimps are from my former group I gave up in 2009 when I had to minimize tanks. The new arrived shrimps looked okay on first sight, but a bit pale inside. Fortunately, I have had enough time to start acclimating them before I had to go to work. I used the dripping method for this; as I always do. I add some Mosura Shrimp Tonic daily from now on to support their immune system. Furthermore, I inserted zeolite to the canister filter. Please cross your fingers that all shrimps will survive the first days!

A closer look on Wild Tiger Shrimps

Werner Klotz has recently presented a video of Tiger shrimps in their natural habitat (download WMV-file). As a big Tiger Shrimp lover, I grab every info I get get. Wild Tiger Shrimps show even wider stripes and more color variation as most peolpe know. Like in other cardina types, the color comes in different ‘layers’ in the exoskeleton: You have fire-red, then purple, then black stripes; sometimes in interdependance to the body coloration.

Here are some picture of my former Supertiger and Wild Tiger Shrimp. I have had body colorations in all primary colors, say: yellow, red, blue, green.

How Supertiger Shrimp look alike

Tiger Shrimp show a large variance in their wild form. This is why a variety of tiger shrimp are displayed in shops with exotic names, however they belong to one and the same class and it is due to the different distribution areas and local environmental factors that these strains sometimes show a striking variance (see also: Red Tiger Shrimp in wild form).

One often can observe a change of color in the area of the head, the tiger stripes or the tail. The Super Tiger, we breed for some time now, show a yellow head and tail. The wine-red or black tiger stripes are a nice contrast to this. The total size of Supertiger Shrimp is impressive, because they are clearly bigger than other tiger shrimp.

My Supertiger show color variances of yellow, blue and red in the body. I try to stabilize these colors through a targeted selection.
