Snow White x Black Tiger

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Anybody interested in crossbreeding Snow White (f) x Black Tiger (male, black eyes) should have a closer look at the remarks of Uwe Neumann in a German forum. In the F1 there are only a low percentage of shrimp with normal black tiger stripes and white on the back. Most of the offspring looks like normal tiger. Breeding further generation by doing backcrossing might be difficult due to infertility. Pictures are only visible for registered users, text is in German. If you are planning to crossbreed these shrimp, remember that not every ‘Snow White’ has the same genetic background, as Black Tiger have neither!

News from my Tank

Here are some updates from my shrimp tank

  1. Goldflakes (caridina spinata): 2 adults died, appearantly having molting problems, had brown bubbles in the neck before. One shrimp is berried! Change filtration to undergravel-canister-combination to reduce drift; shrimp like it and wander around more.
  2. New Bee Shrimp: 2 shrimps are berried but one only carrys few eggs – they seem to be quick egg dropper if something is not convenient. Started a crossbreeding test and put a female ‘Golden Snow White’ in the tank.
  3. Tuepfel: The first shrimp ist berried, took a long long time to go!
  4. CR/CB Shrimp: Have offspring the second time- they like Akadama as gravel.
  5. Black Tiger Hybrids: I set up a little tank with undergravel-air-filter and JBL Manado for my Black Tiger. Will crossbreed them when older.
  6. Supertiger have offspring too.

Black Tiger Shrimp

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Black Tiger Shrimp (caridina cf. cantonensis var. ’schwarze Tiger’) were one of the great sensation in the year 2008. There are two different phenotypes which also differ in genotype.

Black Tiger Shrimp with dark eyes are (when not yet crossbreed with the other variation of Black Tiger Shrimp) mostly not 100% black. The black tiger stripes have been widened from generation to generation while the interior colour of the body remained transparent.

Black Tiger Shrimp with orange eyes, called Black Diamond Shrimp in Japan, have been crossbreed once with Deep Blue Tiger  Shirmp. That’s why they have orange eyes and look more black visually. In fact, the body is tainted in a very dark blue with glint to black or red. Nevertheless, they have wide black stripes also – which cannot bee seen due tu the inner body coloration.

For breeding plans Black Tiger Shrimp with dark eyes are more convenient.

Since they have been very sensitive in the first generations, breeders have backcrossed them with normal Tiger Shrimp to enlarge the gen pool. In Germany, mostly Kai A. Quante, Ralf Blankenhaus, Kurt Mack and Uwe Neumann have stabilized and designed the Black Tiger Shrimp clades. Aquanet.tv filmed an interesting documentation of Uwe Neumann’s shrimps (go to Video).

Though this shrimp is not a CR, it is nevertheless a high grade shrimp for experienced users. An international classification in grades does not excist yet but would be usefull.
