Sulawesi Shrimp Experiment Failed
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009Out of my 14 Goldflake shrimp, I have now a single shrimp left. This is the female which has dropped the eggs after being longtime berried. So after 10 weeks, they are finally all gone though I tried to give my best for them.
It is kind of frustrating that Sulawesi shrimps always arrive in bad condition at the local stores and that (which I guess) importers neglect quarantaine. It seems that wildcaught shrimp are selled in double speed to burden the losses to the last holder…
There is an interesting remark about the export procedure of Sulawesi shrimp in a shrimpnow thread:
‘Most if not all water for packing the shrimps is not from the lakes. So testing the water your shrimps come in with is inaccurate. After collection, the shrimps are quarantine for around a week in the collector “farm”. After the weakest have die off, the rest are packed and sent to Jakarta. The shrimps are further quarantined in Jakarta water before being shipped out. This can be a few days to a week, depending on exporters. As long as the exporter is based in Jakarta, this is what they do.’
Overall, I will not try Sulawesi shrimp anymore if I can’t get captive bred from Germany.
